On this day in 1969, members of the Kennedy Space Center government and industry workforce rise from their consoles within the Launch Control Center (LCC) to watch Apollo 11 liftoff through a window. More than 400,000 people participated in sending astronauts to the Moon 50 years ago, including engineers, mechanics, technicians, scientists, and more who helped the world realize the seemingly impossible – humans landing on the Moon. As the hub of launch operations at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida since the Apollo program, the LCC has played an integral role in NASA's human spaceflight programs for nearly 50 years. Commands from the Launch Control Center ensure that space systems are properly communicating with the ground support equipment and umbilicals.
