NASA’s rocket factory, Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans, is one of the largest manufacturing facilities in the world. With 43 acres of manufacturing space under one roof, Michoud is large enough to contain 31 professional football fields! 🏈
Recently engineers at Michoud have seen a surge of activity as the five major structural pieces of NASA’s Space Launch System (SLS) core stage are completing final outfitting and assembly. Assembly of the forward and intertank are complete, and the liquid oxygen (LOX) and hydrogen tanks are nearly complete as well.
The photo here was taken earlier this summer as the liquid oxygen tank was being moved into Cell A. Since then, the tank has completed installations in Cell A, and has moved on for final inspections. The liquid hydrogen tank measures more than 130 feet tall, comprises almost two-thirds of the core stage and holds 537,000 gallons of liquid hydrogen cooled to minus 423 degrees Fahrenheit. Propellant will flow from the tank to fo...
