NASA reached another milestone in preparations for testing the core stage of its new Space Launch System (SLS) rocket with a May 4 water flow test of the virbo-acoustic aspirator system on the B-2 Test Stand at Stennis Space Center (nasastennis). For the test, stand operators flowed 87,000 gallons of water per minute through the aspirator system, which is designed to provide vibro-acoustic suppression during testing by essentially creating a curtain of water around the firing engines to dampen the loudness of the test and protect the core stage from noise damage. Stennis also performed a water flow test of the of the flame deflector deluge system last December. Stennis is scheduled to test the SLS core stage that will be used on the rocket’s first uncrewed flight, Expedition Mission-1. Preparation for the testing has required extensive modifications to the B-2 stand, affecting all areas and systems.
