NASA InSight blasted off to Mars this morning to the Red Planet to conduct its first thorough checkup since the planet formed 4.5 billion years ago! Seen here, the mobile service tower at Space Launch Complex-3 is rolled back to reveal the United Launch Alliance (ULAlaunch) Atlas-V rocket with our InSight spacecraft onboard.
Our InSight lander launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base on California's Pacific coast aboard the two-stage rocket for a six-month journey to Mars. This mission, our first interplanetary launch from the west coast, will detect “marsquakes” and help us discover how rocky planets form.
