A portrait from the archives of NASA astronaut John Glenn, taken in 1962 during Project Mercury, which completed six manned spaceflights between 1961 and 1963. Glenn became the first American to orbit Earth in 1962 aboard Friendship 7, making three orbits around Earth. Following his decorated service to NASA and in the U.S. Marine Corps, Glenn went on to serve as a U.S. Senator from his home state of Ohio. He died on December 8, 2016 at the age of 95.
