This is so cool!! And a bit hot too... After our third Spacecraft Fire Experiment (Saffire-III), we're getting pretty good at setting big fires in space. Did you know that flames spread more slowly in microgravity? Don't be fooled, though — the sluggish flame means smoke production could be slower, resulting in a time delay for a smoke detector to alert astronauts. Slow-moving fires also produce larger amounts of carbon monoxide, the leading contributor to suffocation in house fires. We're studying flammability of different materials as well as fire detection and post-fire monitoring and cleanup in space. Keeping astronauts safe is goal number one!
