An incredible aerial view of the world's best known launch complex and spaceport of the future, NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida (nasakennedy). Central in the picture is the iconic Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB), which is in many ways, the heart of the operation. Off in the distance in the top right corner of the photo is Launch Pad 39B. For 30 years, space shuttles lifted off from pad 39B on missions into low-Earth orbit. Did you know that it was NASA's shuttle missions that facilitated the building of the International Space Station (iss)? Today the launch pad is being modified to support the next generation of launch vehicles and crew capsules, including the Space Launch System rocket and Orion spacecraft. Together, they will roll out to pad 39B from High Bay 3 of the VAB atop the Mobile Launcher, then launch into deep space on Exploration Mission-1, scheduled for 2018.
