Stennis Space Center conducted cluster testing early in the Space Shuttle Program – as shown in this 1979 photo – to make sure a three-engine configuration would perform well enough to lift the shuttle into orbit. Successful testing of the engine cluster still is considered one of the finest achievements at Stennis.
