Let's celebrate the weekend by having a look inside the model shop at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, where technicians have been building models since the early 1960s in support of agency programs. While the SLS program is designing and building the world’s most powerful rocket for deep space science and exploration missions, expert builders are crafting a limited quantity of SLS models to teach the public about the rocket that will bring us farther on our nation's journey to Mars .
Made of a casting plastic called alumilite, these models are created by forming an original rubber mold of each piece, pouring and curing the alumilite mixture, assembling the pieces and painting them. This model required 14 different molds and took about five weeks to replicate and construct.
Happy weekend!
