NASA astronaut Ronald Evans, the command module pilot of Apollo 17, spent more time in lunar orbit than any other astronaut in history. While the other crew members, Eugene Cernan (the last man to step onto the surface of the moon) and Harrison Schmitt, descended to the surface of the moon, Evans stayed in the module and examined geological lunar features from orbit. While in orbit, he completed a spacewalk to obtain equipment stored on the outside of the spacecraft.
