For the first time for an American spacecraft returning to Earth, a remotely piloted aircraft -- named Ikhana/ MQ-9 Predator B -- provided live video feed of re-entry, descent and splashdown.
Based at NASA's Armstrong Flight Research Center at Edwards, California, Ikhana flew its own race track pattern to the south of Orion's projected entry trajectory where it glimpsed the first shots of parachute deployment. It then provided live video of splashdown to NASA
TV.
