Ever wonder where the Space Launch System is being built? Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans is where the magic is happening!
Michoud is a massive facility spread over 800 acres operated by the Marshall Center in Huntsville, Ala. and the huge building where many SLS components are coming together covers 43 acres. This collage shows three separate areas within the facility that are building pieces for SLS. The top of the collage is a dome piece that will fit on top of the barrel segment that is seen below. These two pieces will be parts of fuel tanks for SLS and will be welded together with rings in the tool on the right of the collage. This tool is in the Vertical Assembly Center. Cool fact - the foundation of the vertical assembly center could support the tallest building in New Orleans.
