Cicada-palooza! We’re all used to the buzzing sounds of cicadas in the late spring and summer, but this year is special. This spring, millions of cicadas that have been resting underground for 13 years will emerge in central NC! We know what you’re thinking… “Millions of bugs?! Should we be worried?” Not at all! These fascinating creatures may be a bit noisy, but they’re harmless and pretty cool once you get to know them. Enjoy the rare spectacle of millions of periodical cicadas (which emerge every 13-17 years depending on location) joining our annual cicadas (which come back every year) for a mega symphony. These buzzing buddies will also fill a crucial ecological role by providing food for wildlife as well as aerating the soil. Sill not a fan? Don’t worry, the periodical cicadas will only be around for a month or so, just long enough to lay eggs and start their long lifecycle over again.
