Last week, coach.alexpenner gave us some great ways to progress the simple pushup. The squat is perhaps the lower body equivalent of the pushup in terms of bodyweight at home usage. This week, Coach Alex is back again with ways to progress the squat, specifically, how to progress to more challenging single leg variants. ⠀

The pistol squat and the airborne lunge (shrimp squat) are 2 great single leg squat variations that you can do from home.⠀

To progress to Pistol Squats, I recommend box step-downs and elevated pistol squats first to establish full ROM in the support leg. The next challenge is being able to keep the free leg lifted throughout the entire ROM on flat ground. Inadequate strength in the free leg’s hip flexors as well as inadequate Dorsiflexion in the support leg are common culprits for falling back at the bottom of the movement. If your issue is ankle dorsiflexion, I recommend trying these with the heel elevated.⠀
