With back to school season in full force it's not surprising that this week in 1916, a new school opened. Emily Griffith opened her school under the guiding statement, "opportunities for all who wish to learn." 🏫
Emily set the dream years earlier when she moved to Denver and began teaching as a substitute teacher for Denver Public Schools. In 1915, she appealed to the Denver School Board with an innovative concept. She was inspired by her uncle who ran a night school for adults. She wanted to open a school that would provide free education to any adult who needed a second chance.
On September 9, Emily's dream came true. She greeted each student that day as they entered the steps of the school. She estimated that 200 students would attend in its first year, however, 1,400 students enrolled in the first week! The school held classes 13 hours a day, 5 days a...
