🌳PLANTING PROJECT SPOTLIGHT: MADAGASCAR 🌳 The estuaries of the Betsiboka River were once surrounded by mangrove forests that held a variety of habitats for unique plant and animal species. The mangroves’ deep root systems are also vital for stabilizing the coastline and reducing erosion. Unfortunately, nearly a century of logging of these mangroves has resulted in massive deforestation and exceptionally high erosion rates. With the loss of mangroves, bright red soils from the hillsides are washed into the streams and rivers to the coast. The sediment is filling and clogging the coastal waterways, with devastating consequences for animal life and the livelihoods of local villagers. In partnership with our friends at edenprojects, we’re working to strategically restore 600,000 trees along the coast of Madagascar to help preserve this unique ecosystem.
