Deforestation has deepened poverty levels as farmland erodes and flooding destroys homes and entire communities. In the past, poverty has led to conflict.  This year, Burundi has been severely affected by heavy rains and floods causing displacement and damage. In 2021, almost 400,000 Burundians have been displaced as a result of environmental disasters over recent years.
