Time for another #ThrowbackThursday: Calgary theatre history edition.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ In 1911, Senator James Lougheed, a prominent Calgary lawyer, businessman and politician, built this six-story brick structure at the corner of 1 Street and 6 Avenue SW.⁣ ⁣ A large portion of the building was occupied by the Grand Theatre Opera House (for a time known as the Sherman Grand Theatre), with the surrounding Lougheed Building offices, retail and apartments providing some of Calgary’s most prominent commercial and residential locations at the time.⁣ ⁣⁣ The Lougheed Building and Grand Theatre began to experience underuse in the final decades of the 20th century, and were at risk of demolition in the early 2000s.
