Del Monte Golf Course first opened for play on May 1, 1897. The nine-hole layout stretched out to 2,219 yards. Charlie Maud, who had been introduced to Monterey by playing polo on the grounds just north of Hotel Del Monte, created the original design. Del Monte became one of the first 18-hole courses in California in 1903.
