Today all Major League clubs will celebrate the centennial of the founding of the Negro National League which boasted many Hall of Fame worthy players who were never allowed to play Major League Baseball - like Roanoke native Larry Legrande.
Larry was the youngest of nine children, raised on a mini farm just outside of Roanoke. He said his saving grace was having Saturday as all his - baseball from sun up to sun down. Larry was first noticed by the Negro Leagues as a catcher at age 14.
He batted .300 for 3 consecutive years (57-59), led the Negro Leagues in outfield assists (58-59) and had an extremely accurate throwing arm.
I mean, how else do you get chosen by the legendary Satchel Paige to play catcher for his All-Star team?
