Bill Millin was born in Saskatchewan on this date in 1922. His Scottish immigrant father moved the family back to Glasgow when Bill was three. A statue in Normandy commemorates Millin's incredible bravery during the D-Day invasion at Sword Beach. He piped British forces ashore and further inland despite fierce resistance. Millin began to play Highland Laddie as troops landed on the beach. He wore the kilt his father wore while fighting in WWI. Mere seconds after stepping into the water, the solider next to him was shot in the face and killed instantly. Carrying no weapon other than a ceremonial dagger in his stocking, Millin played on as those around him fell. Captured German soldiers revealed they did not shoot at him because they believed he'd gone mad! ___________________ #ScotSpirit #standrewstoronto #bagpipes #bagpiper #meninkilts #ww2 #normandy #worldwar #swordbeach #scottishhistory
