The first MRI scanner was developed by a team at the University of Aberdeen. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) uses strong magnetic fields and radio waves to produce detailed images of the inside of the body. The revolutionary device is considered to be a safer diagnostic tool than X-rays and more useful for soft tissue imaging. The first patient was successfully scanned 41 years ago in August of 1980.
