Today marks the 275th anniversary of the Battle of Culloden. The battle marked the climax of the Jacobite uprising. Forces loyal to Bonnie Prince Charlie were defeated by the Duke of Cumberland's government army. Fought near Inverness, it lasted under an hour. It is estimated that 1,250 Jacobites were killed and 376 taken prisoner. Charles Edward Stuart (aka Bonnie Prince Charlie) escaped with a bounty on his head. He was led to safety through the help of his supporters. One of those was Flora MacDonald, who famously rowed him to the Isle of Skye, with him dressed as her maid. He never set foot in Scotland again and lived out the rest of his years in exile. After the Battle of Culloden, the wearing of the tartan and the playing of the bagpipes were banned. Many fought through the years to promote, pass down, and preserve these cultural elements in Scotland and beyond. ______________________ #scotland #highlands #scottishhighlands #scotlandisnow #outlander #inverness #scottishst...
