One week from today, Canadians of Scottish heritage will celebrate Tartan Day on April 6th. The festivities began in Nova Scotia before spreading across the country and beyond. The incredible impact of Scottish immigrants on the province is evident in its name. Nova Scotia directly translates to "New Scotland" in Latin as well as French (Nouvelle-Écosse) and Scottish Gaelic (Alba Nuadh). The provincial tartan was created in 1953. It is a district tartan that may be worn by anyone. The blue represents the sea and sky while the greens stand for the evergreens and deciduous trees. The white symbolizes the rocks and coastline surf.
