Did you know that Alexander Graham Bell was an honourary Mohawk chief? . The Bell family left Scotland in 1870 and settled in Brantford, Ontario. Keenly interested in hearing and speech, Bell learned the Mohawk language spoken on the nearby Six Nations reserve. He then translated its unwritten vocabulary into visible speech symbols. . The tribe made Bell an honourary chief to express their gratitude. He was outfitted in Mohawk regalia and taught their war dance. . Bell was deeply moved by this and considered it to be one of his greatest accolades. For the rest of his life, he would break into the war dance when he became excited. . . ____________________________________________ #scotland #scottishhistory #bell #alexandergrahambell #mohawk #wardance #firstnations #standrewstoronto ______________________________________________
