This creative thursday, we are featuring a group of incredible people who are dedicated to one unique historic artefact – the Coracle 🛶 A coracle is a traditional hide boat, used in the British Isles from as early as the Bronze age through to the present. Leatherworker Hamish Lamley, Tanner Peter Ananin, and willow Weaver Jane Wilkinson have teamed together to pursue making coracles in the traditional way with willow and hide to bring the tradition back to Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 The willow is soaked, staked into the ground, gunnels weaved from thin willow, then all bent into shape to form the frame and lashed with rawhide strips. The frame is then covered in a single thick cowhide which has been limed to remove the hair. The hide is soaked then stretched over the frame and lashed in place to dry and tighten over it. This creates a strong vessel that can skim over the water for fishing and trading.✂️⚒ Have a look at these pictures of their work or head to the video below to watch...
