A new addition to the patient list in the last couple of weeks is this 17 year old man who is four months post surgery following a subtalar dislocation.
Defined as a separation of the talocalcaneal and talonavicular articulations, subtalar dislocation is commonly caused by high-energy mechanisms (in our example, somebody playing football for the first time having been a rugby player for years!) which include falls from height, motor vehicle crashes, and twisting leg injuries. The dislocations are divided into medial, lateral, anterior, and posterior types on the basis of the direction in which the distal part of the foot has shifted in relation to the talus.
The X-rays here show the separation, our patient underwent successful surgical reduction because there was also articular cartilage damage which needed addressing.
He is now back weight bearing and rehab is focussed on reducing some residual swelling, improving balance, lower limb strength work and improving ankle/subtalar...
