In Christine Sun Kim’s Echo Trap series, the artist uses the concept of an echo as a metaphor for the relationship between a sign language interpreter and a Deaf individual. The drawings visualize the word “echo” as a sound wave bouncing across all four edges of the paper. The words “hand” and “palm” are written on slants and angles or flipped upside down indicating the distortions and reverberations of meaning and intention.
