For Michael Armitage drawing is “a very literal part of my process because it is exactly what I’m thinking, exactly what I’m looking at, it’s exactly what’s caught my attention.” Using imagery from a wide range of sources, including scenes from life, pictures and videos from the Internet, newspaper clippings, and photos taken with his phone, the artist depicts aspects of Kenyan cultural and political life, as well as its people, wildlife, and landscape. Drawing is an intimate aspect of his practice, a preparatory tool to ignite his imagination and make ideas tangible.
