Happy International Women’s Day! For #womenshistorymonth we are honoring women artists as part of womeninthearts’s #5womenartists campaign, which asks organizations and museums around the world to name five women artists as a way to bring spotlighted attention to their work and practices. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ —⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Today we are naming mystically-minded female artists whose abstract ways of making art have long been underrecognized, including the geometric and spiritual drawings featured in our 2005 exhibition “3x Abstraction: New Methods of Drawing by Emma Kunz, Hilma af Klint, and Agnes Martin.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ —⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Along with this legendary trio of artists, Guo Fengyi, an artist currently on view in “To See from a Distance,” similarly used abstraction as a way to achieve higher consciousness and self-knowledge.
