“The Pencil Is a Key: Drawings by Incarcerated Artists” is closing tomorrow, Jan 5! For the final weekend of the exhibition, we will be open late today and tomorrow (12pm - 8pm). Featuring over 140 drawings by artists incarcerated in varying conditions of imprisonment, “The Pencil Is a Key” is a testament to the centrality of drawing to our own humanity. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Polish-Jewish artist Halina Olomucki, was incarcerated in the Warsaw Ghetto during the Second World War. Olomucki used drawing as a way to bear witness of the horrors of the Nazi regime. Viewing herself as a vital chronicler of her community’s suffering, Olomucki would drop bundles of drawings along the way to her labor assignments which would be smuggled out of the ghetto to her friends in the rest of the city, and covertly produced images for her fellow prisoners by hiding them around the barracks.
