The six early career artists featured in “Point of Departure: Open Sessions 15," on view through November 10, present experiments with drawing and its many manifestations. . Bahar Behbahani, one of the six artists in Open Sessions 15, has an artistic practice that includes painting, video, installation, and community engagement, weaves layers of archival material with cartographic and horticultural historical documents to produce compositions that are both political and poetic. For "Point of Departure," Behbahani reinvented the medium of drawing as a tool to render her sketches to build a raft for navigating local water systems and addressing larger global water concerns. In the process, she realized the complexities of developing a safe raft, which is buoyant in order to move bodies, food, culture, memories, and belongings with dignity and to arrive safely on another shore.
