On-view now “Point of Departure: Open Sessions 15” is the fourth iteration of Open Sessions, a six-part exhibition program featuring the work of early career artists who explore the nature of drawing in its many manifestations.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Katarina Burin’s sculpture, drawing, text, and installation works are informed by the history of architecture, with an emphasis on female architects and historical documentation. Burin’s Lobby Planter for Lemon Thyme, probably 1977 references former Eastern Bloc design vocabularies that she observed on a particular family summer vacation in the former Yugoslavia. With its inserted and cast elements, the planter also serves as a commemoration of the concept of “leisure” and the architecture that was used by the socialist state to create a false sense of freedom in the oppressed population. Burin’s work addresses and undermines misrepresented historical narratives while playing with notions of authorship, authenticity, and collective memory.⠀⠀⠀⠀...
