Open Sessions Artist 2018-20: Alexis Callender on the Creative Block and Process
.
“Often if I’m struggling to resolve a work, my first instinct is to move on to the next piece, knowing that whatever form I’m struggling to exact will usually come out of my hand more fluidly in the next piece. And then I go back. My work is often responding to some historical narrative or language that I am reading or thinking about. So if I’m stuck I just sit in the studio and read, jotting and sketching on big sheets of butcher paper like notes, as I go. The other thing I’ll do when I feel blocked, is to introduce a new process or material into my making, to help move around whatever feels stuck by giving myself new conditions to respond to. Taking a day off to go see great art works too!” - Alexis Callender
