This is the first exhibition entirely devoted to Rauch’s drawings in the United States. Featuring more than one hundred fifty never or rarely seen works that span over thirty years of Rauch’s career, this exhibition presents drawing as an essential but often overlooked aspect of his oeuvre. . Neo Rauch creates scenarios that are both compelling and the least known of his drawings. These are generally done on large sheets of paper and are reminiscent of Da Vinci’s “deluge” drawings. They combine many different styles and modes of thinking. In particular, the series of compositional thumbnail sketches are intriguing in light of Rauch’s claim that he always starts his paintings from the lower right-hand corner without any preconceived compositional strategies.
