Maya Lin (b.1959) is an American designer and artist who works primarily in sculpture and land art to address historical moments and environmental issues. Using technology like sonar maps and satellite imaging, Lin’s acute installations explore the relationship people have with their environment by bringing elements of nature into an urban setting. For example, in “Water Line” (2006) Lin used wire to reconstruct the topography of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, which is the ocean floor north of Antarctica and one of the most remote places on earth. Bringing the contours of the bottom of the sea to an interior gallery space is indicative of Lin’s astounding ability to synthesize momentous nature into an accessible viewing experience.
