Luis Camnitzer (b. 1937) is a German-born Uruguayan artist who after moving to New York, became a central figure of 1960s conceptualism. As a co-founder of the New York Graphic Workshop, Camnitzer sought to expand printmaking and did so primarily by incorporating language. Camnitzer’s use of language as medium led his work to shift towards addressing socio political problems in both Latin America and the United States. Troubled by the military regimes taking root in South American countries, Camnitzer responded to these political contexts in his printmaking. “Uruguayan Torture Series,” Camnitzer’s well-known series of etchings addressed the civil-military rule that overtook the country between 1973-85.
