Feng Mengbo (b. 1966) is a Chinese artist who self identifies as a “video game artist,” but whose digital media work aligns closely with Political Pop— a term used to refer to Chinese artists of the 1990s who criticized the new national fascination with wealth and commodity by juxtaposing Cultural Revolution propaganda with symbols of global capitalism like Coca-Cola logos. Mengbo grew up during the Cultural Revolution and was part of a generation that was greatly affected by China’s economic reform and open policy after the death of Mao Zedong. Often referred to as China’s “Godfather” of new media art, Mengbo takes imagery from classic video games like Super Mario Bros. and Street Fighter II along with Cultural Revolution motifs.
