Olga de Amaral (b. 1932) is a Colombian artist who creates fiber work made from linen, paper, gesso and gold. Amaral’s meticulous use of silver and gold leaf creates brilliant shimmering surfaces that are stitched with expertise. Amaral thinks of them as “golden surfaces of light.” The use of precious metals evokes both pre-Columbian artifacts and the texture of the natural phenomena native to Colombia - glistening rivers, round hills, and jagged mountains. By employing indigenous weaving techniques and Baroque elements brought by Spanish colonists, Amaral’s practice is mixed culturally and materially.
