Kevin Brownlow and Andrew Mollo began making a film entitled “It Happened Here” in 1956. Eight years later, in 1964, the film was first shown at the Cork Film Festival in Cork City, Ireland. It tells the story of the Nazi occupation of Great Britain following an invasion that took place on the heels of the British retreat from Dunkirk. The film was widely decried for focusing not only on Nazi occupiers but also on the existence, indeed, the ubiquity, of British collaborators. In 1968, Brownlow published a book called “How It Happened Here,” which recounts the film’s production and troubled reception. .
