Corita Kent (1918 - 1986), or Sister Mary Kent, was a Catholic nun, activist, artist, and educator who taught as the head of the art department at Immaculate Heart of Mary in Los Angeles where she fostered a symbiotic relationship with her students by assigning creatively challenging projects that required serious dedication. Kent said of her classes: “You aren’t needed to be there to get good grades or to pass the course - you are needed to help make the class. So the structure is for you and you also are the structure; your particular gifts help shape it.” Kent would create her own art during school breaks when she would hunker down in the basement studio and work feverishly on screen prints and drawings that combined corporate logos, advertisements, religious text and excerpts from her favorite literature.
