Louise Nevelson (1899 - 1988) was an American artist who used scrap wood and discarded furniture to create large-scale monochromatic sculptures that reflect a rich personal history. Born in present-day Keiv, Ukraine, Nevelson and her family immigrated to the United States in the early twentieth-century. As a Jewish, Yiddish-speaking family the Nevelsons were a minority in Maine, but Louise Nevelson moved to New York City where she attended the Arts Students League, and became involved in the New York art scene of the mid-twentieth century. Influenced by constructivism, cubism, and abstract expressionism, Nevelson pioneered installation and site specific art by creating sculptures large enough to fill entire rooms.
