Mark Steven Greenfield (b. 1951) is an American visual artist whose recent body of abstract drawings investigate the subconscious effect that racial imagery has on the African American experience. Greenfield draws in a calligraphic and graphically abstract style to work through and around the power of stereotypical images by way of psychological mapping. Similar to automatist techniques and intuitive mark making, Greenfield is driven by his subconscious to create patterns and shapes that spill from an uncontrolled emptying of his brain. Oftentimes listening to music, Greenfield’s drawing sessions last for hours and are a form of meditation that ruminate the negative space on the page.
