Candida Höfer (b. 1944) is a German photographer and previous student of Bernd and Hilla Becher: a collaborative pair of artists that documented industrial architecture through black and white photographic series, or “typologies”, that focused on structures with exactitude and neutrality. Höfer, informed by this approach to documentary photography, captures the interiority of empty public buildings like libraries, museums, zoos, and opera houses in large-format color photographs that focus stunningly on the space’s architectural elements, patterns, and surfaces. The images are always of the structure itself; people, or signs of people, are totally absent which brings specific attention to the space.
