Lygia Clark (1920 - 1988) was a Brazilian artist involved in many art historical movements such as Constructivism, the Bauhaus, and Neo-Concretism. In her early constructivist and Bauhaus-influenced paintings and sculptures, Clark composed geometric compositions using techniques inspired by industrial and technological design. Instead of using lines, Clark put together different “planes” in order to produce invisible, or what she called “organic lines.” “What I seek is to compose a space,” Clark wrote, “and not compose in it.” In 1959, Clark along with Hélio Oiticica and Lygia Pape, wrote the “Neo-Concrete Manifesto,” which was created in response to Concrete Art.
