Pavel Pepperstein (b. 1966) is a Russian author and visual artist that works in drawing and painting to create fairytale-esque illustrations of landscapes and characters. Pepperstein’s works on paper reference historico-political movements, Russian folklore, linguistics, and science fiction. Describing his works as “psychedelic realist,” Pepperstein deals with existential themes with an aesthetic that was forged out of the Russian avant-garde. Using a compositional geometry similar to the Russian Suprematists, Pepperstein adds a fantastical quality to his minimalistic drawings that aligns them with the whimsy of children book illustrations while speaking to the socio-cultural history of Russia and the West.
