Howard Hodgkin (1932 - 2017) was a British artist that rose to prominence in the 1970s due to his singular approach to painting and printmaking. Visually operating between abstraction and figuration, Hodgkin has been labeled by art historians as both an abstract and representational artist. Although his colorful paintings include recognizable forms, Hodgkin's use of abstract tonal hues imbue an emotionality that turns his works into indirect, ambiguous representations.
