Nancy Graves (1939-1995) was a cross-disciplinary American artist that worked in a variety of media including sculpture, drawing, painting, and set design. Emerging from the post-minimalist 1970s era in New York, Graves was the first female artist to receive a solo exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art, which featured her famous camel sculptures. Reminiscent of taxidermy, Graves’ exhibition of three realistic camels was a critical investigation into verisimilitude in art. Naturalistic sciences and visualization of information continued to be themes throughout her career which later included printmaking and painting. After her rigorous exploration into sculpture and modes of display, Graves turned to painting which drew from maps, diagrams, and satellite images to create expressive canvases that combined scientific data with abstraction.
