Sonia Boyce (b. 1962) is a British Afro-Caribbean artist that has worked in several mediums throughout her career including drawing, photography, and installation to explore the sociopolitical position of the black female body in white British society. Boyce explains: “The constant in my work has always been a discussion around gender, race and sexuality; it was never just about me but, more broadly, about the role and representation of the black female figure. Growing up in Britain in the 1960s and ’70s, I felt the historical and cultural narratives about the black female subject were quite limited.” In her early career, Boyce was a part of the Black British cultural renaissance of 1980s and was known for her pastel drawings that featured domestic life and childhood experiences with striking backgrounds of wallpaper with Caribbean patterns.
