Lee Bontecou (b. 1931) propelled to stardom in the 1960s with her dynamic work that metamorphosed sculpture by using fundamental qualities of other artistic disciplines. Most innovative was Bontecou’s positioning of her pieces, which were situated on the wall instead of the ground like in traditional sculpture. Bontecou’s wall reliefs, made out of industrial materials like wire, steel, wood, and canvas, activate the space around them through their strong directionality. Usually centered around an ominous black void made from fabric, the rectangular-patterned structures extend out towards the viewer with an arresting force. Bontecou continued her transgression between mediums with her more recent sculpture that hang from the ceiling.
